COMPANY FOUNDER

Giancarlo Guidi

In 1968, in the heart of the Emilia-Romagna region in central Italy, the forward-thinking and determined Giancarlo Guidi founded Guidi Farms specialising in poultry farming focusing on niche breeds including Leghorn chickens, Golden chickens, Cockerels, Guinea fowls and Capons. At the same time he began planting his first orchards. Alongside his natural aptitude for innovation and enterprise, the founder has always maintained a vision of traditionally established corporate management built around the family. This has proved to be a successful strategy.

TODAY

With the growing family, its children and grandchildren, Guidi Farms has expanded strongly in all its production divisions and created pioneering investment programmes all with an unwavering commitment to the values upon which the company was originally founded. Today, Giancarlo Guidi, who received the Cavaliere (Order of Merit for Labour) honour in 2008, is responsible for the operations of the family business. The results in the breeding and growing divisions speak for themselves: each year the company produces around 400,000 kg of fruit and around 5 million birds. All of it safe and flavourful high-quality produce. Products which make the difference.

AGRICOLA GUIDI – BEGINNINGS

Mariano Guidi took his first steps in the world of agriculture during the 1950s when cultivating the fields and cattle raising were still complementary. From the fields came natural food for and from the animals as well as natural fertilizer for the fields. Inspired by his father, in 1968 Giancarlo Guidi founded Guidi Farms. Today’s business was opened in the 1970s and managed with the firmness and tenacity of Giancarlo, shaped by a vision rooted in farming tradition but always open to the challenges of the future. With the invaluable support of his wife Fausta, the Società Agricola Guidi di Roncofreddo di Guidi Giancarlo e Nicolini Fausta – Guidi Farms – came to life in the heart of Emilia-Romagna.

OPENING THE POULTRY SLAUGHTERHOUSE

Giancarlo Giudi’s intuition and enterprise led to the first poultry farms being opened in the hilly area of Roncofreddo for the breeding of niche breeds including Leghorn chickens, Golden chickens, Cockerels, Guinea fowls and Capons. All raised on the ground following traditional methods. At the end of the 1980s with the company doing well Giancarlo Guidi took the decision to stop producing solely for third parties and start his own slaughter and packaging business so as to take his brand directly to the consumer. The poultry slaughterhouse was opened in 1987 in Felloniche in Roncofreddo. With continued expansion over the years the company has also been able to provide a valid solution to the employment problems in the area.

Faithful to the traditional values and the family-run philosophy, Giancarlo Guidi has passed on his passion, dedication, experience and expertise to his children. His son Roberto and daughter Ivana came to work in the company once their studies were complete, and they were soon joined by their spouses. This family tradition provides continuity and also guarantees the company’s commitment to embracing the ideas and initiatives of the new generation.

INVESTING IN THE PRODUCTION OF GREEN ENERGY

In 2009 Guidi Farms began a project to install at all of their business premises (slaughterhouses, farms and offices) a photovoltaic system to independently produce the energy required for the operation of the industrial installations using the power of the sun. In addition to the production of green energy, Guidi Farms is committed to maximising energy savings while minimising waste in production and business activities.

ANTIBIOTIC-FREE BREEDING

Since its inception, Guidi Farms has been focused on reducing the use of antibiotics in the animals it breeds. A project to further this aim was started in 2012 and reached the objective of 100% antibiotic-free production in 2014. The entire range of Guidi Farms products, cockerels, chickens, capons and Guinea fowls, fulfil this requirement: they are raised without the use of antibiotics, information which was added to the labels in June of 2016. This result was achieved via slow growing of the animals and the collaboration of everyone involved in the production cycle, particularly the breeders who have a key role and from whom the greatest efforts in terms of workload and investment were required. Guidi Farms now adheres to the UNAITALIA n°IT001EA Voluntary Labelling Scheme which requires periodic inspections and controls by the CSQA certification authority.

Roncofreddo, in the heart of Romagn

Roncofreddo is a small town in the rolling hills of Emilia-Romagna, in the province of Forlì Cesena. Nestled in the hills of Cesena the town overlooks the lovely Rubicone valley and enjoys enchanting views of the sea as well as beautifully fresh, clean air. Roncofreddo isn’t a place where the land can be worked part time. Here hard work is needed to encourage the apricots to flower in the rugged valleys, gorges and hills. Hard work to optimise the smallholdings while safeguarding people and the environment.

Clean energy

100% of the electricity used for our processes comes from renewable sources (wind or solar power)*

The Guidi family believes that the protection of our natural heritage is of paramount importance, representing one of the most significant challenges of our time. Those who work in close contact with the land and animals know that a healthy environment should be a top priority and that growth may only be termed development when it’s sustainable. This requires profound awareness and responsibility towards the environment and ongoing commitment which needs to be reflected through informed choices made on a daily basis. Significant projects have been developed to limit the impact on the environment as much as possible, in the conviction that the preservation of the natural heritage is necessary to providing genuine products that are both high in quality and safe for the consumer as well as for future generations. Photovoltaic systems have been installed for the production of renewable energy from solar sources on the rooftops of the business premises in order to achieve energy independence. All production sites have adopted a system of recycling as well as optimised production processes and transportation to ensure protection of the environment.

THE NUMBERS

The Livestock Division raises about 5,000,000 heads per year including Leghorn chickens, Golden chickens, Cockerels, Guinea fowls, Capons and other prestige chicken breeds. In the Energy Division, the company currently has 4,642 kW installed.
